Nazaré.

A traditional fishing town that happens to produce the biggest surfable waves on Earth — golden sand in summer, sixty-foot mountains of Atlantic in winter.

The area

The world's biggest waves, the warmest welcome

Nazaré is two towns in one. Below: the Praia, a crescent of golden sand backed by whitewashed lanes where fisherwomen still wear seven skirts and fish dries on racks in the sun. Above: the Sítio, reached by a century-old funicular, perched on the cliff at the edge of the deep.

That edge is the Nazaré Canyon — the largest underwater canyon in Europe, funnelling Atlantic swells straight at Praia do Norte and amplifying them into the biggest waves ever surfed. The world record rides of the last decade — waves measured around 24 to 26 metres — all happened here, watched from the red lighthouse of the São Miguel Arcanjo fort.

The result is a town with an energy no resort can manufacture: families on the beach in August, the world's best big-wave surfers in the harbour in December, and a property market lifted by year-round global attention.

Why buy here

Why Nazaré works.

01 —

The biggest waves on Earth

The underwater Nazaré Canyon — deeper than the Grand Canyon is tall — focuses Atlantic swells into Praia do Norte. World-record waves around 24–26 metres have been surfed here.

02 —

A real fishing town

Seven-skirt traditions, fish drying in the sun on the beach, a working harbour and some of the best seafood in Portugal — authenticity that tourism hasn't diluted.

03 —

The Sítio and the funicular

Ride the 1889 funicular to the cliff-top Sítio for the view that launched a thousand listings — the whole bay curving south beneath you.

04 —

Two seasons, both busy

Summer brings beach families; winter brings the big-wave circus, film crews and surf pilgrims from every continent. Rental demand rarely sleeps.

See it, then visit it

Questions we hear

Asked & answered.

Can you actually swim at Nazaré?
Absolutely — the main town beach (Praia da Nazaré) is a sheltered golden crescent perfect for families. The giant waves happen at Praia do Norte, on the other side of the headland, and only on big winter swells. Two beaches, two personalities.
When can I see the big waves?
The big-wave season runs roughly October to March, and the giant days depend on swell forecasts — sometimes with only a few days' notice. The fort of São Miguel Arcanjo and its surf museum are worth the visit any day of the year.
Is Nazaré just a tourist town?
No — it's a working fishing harbour first. The boats go out, the auction runs, the fish dries on the beach. Tourism layers on top of that authenticity rather than replacing it, which is a large part of its charm and resilience.
Does property hold value here?
Nazaré's unique global brand — there is only one place on Earth with these waves — underpins durable demand. View properties in particular trade on scarcity. As always, we'll show you the current numbers before you decide anything.
