A working Portuguese city built on thermal springs, ceramics and a market that has run every single morning for centuries — ten minutes from the beach, one hour from Lisbon.
Caldas da Rainha — literally “the Queen's hot springs” — was born in 1484, when Queen Leonor founded a thermal hospital beside the sulphurous spring she saw locals using on the road to Batalha. That hospital still stands beside Parque D. Carlos I, and the city has been looking after people ever since.
This is the Silver Coast's commercial heart. The Praça da Fruta hosts Portugal's only daily open-air farmers' market, the ceramics of Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro fill shop windows and museum walls, and in 2019 UNESCO named Caldas a Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art. Unlike the resort towns, life here runs twelve months a year.
For buyers, that means infrastructure most coastal towns can't match: a public hospital, secondary schools, an arts-and-design university, hypermarkets, a theatre, and a café culture that never closes for winter. Foz do Arelho beach and the Óbidos Lagoon are ten minutes west.

Fruit, vegetables, flowers, bread and cheese direct from the farms around the city — the Praça da Fruta has traded daily for generations and is the social engine of the town.
From the Bordallo Pinheiro factory and museum to the ceramic-route street art, Caldas lives and breathes clay. UNESCO Creative City of Crafts and Folk Art since 2019.
Public hospital, arts university, theatres, sports clubs, shopping and a packed cultural calendar — everything you need without driving to Lisbon.
Foz do Arelho, where the Óbidos Lagoon meets the Atlantic, and the surf of São Martinho do Porto are both an easy drive from your front door.
